ABOUT THE CITY
Guildford is the county town of Surrey, sitting in a gap in the North Downs about 27 miles south-west of London. The town grew up around a crossing of the River Wey and in Saxon times had its own royal mint, striking coins from AD 978. The Normans built a castle there that Henry III developed into a royal residence, and the High Street still climbs steeply beneath the Guildhall's gilded clock of 1683.
Notable figures born, raised or living in Guildford include author P.G. Wodehouse, guitarist Eric Clapton, and the band The Stranglers, who formed in the town in 1974.
Guildford is also Britain's video game capital, home to the studios behind Populous, Fable, LittleBigPlanet and No Man's Sky.
